Antidepressants During Pregnancy May Slow Growth of Baby’s Head

(March 5, 2012 - Insidermedicine)Use of popular antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, during pregnancy may be associated with a slight slowing of the growth of the baby’s head and an increased risk for preterm birth.
According to research published online ahead of print in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
Here is some information about depression during pregnancy:
  • An estimated 13% of women experience symptoms of depression during pregnancy or during the period right after their baby is born
  • For some women, a trigger for depression during this time may be the change in hormone levels that the body undergoes
  •  Women with a personal or family history of depression or other mental illness are at increased risk for experiencing depression during pregnancy

Researchers from Sophia Children’s Hospital and Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam followed the health of nearly 8,000 pregnant women and their babies. Among these women, about 7% had significant symptoms of depression but were not taking SSRIs. Another 1% were using SSRIs, which include the popular antidepressants Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft.

Among the women with significant symptoms of depression who were not taking SSRIs, growth of the baby’s body and head during pregnancy occurred slightly more slowly than the growth of the babies in women who were not depressed. In comparison, use of SSRIs by the mothers was associated with even slower growth of the baby’s heads, but the growth of the baby’s bodies was unaffected. The women taking SSRIs were also about twice as likely to give birth to a preterm baby as those not taking SSRIs.

Today’s research adds to the growing body of information on how SSRI use during pregnancy may affect child health. Further research is needed to determine exactly what the health implications, if any, of these effects are.

JArcherLaw has been fighting for people who have been injured on the job or injured as the result of pharmaceutical or other negligence for over thirty years. The firm has helped  clients win significant compensation as redress for their lost loved ones, lost earnings, lost jobs, and other injuries. When a person is exposed to asbestos and develops asbestosis or Mesothelioma as the result, the company manufacturing the product needs to be accountable to the person(s) they have harmed. JArcherLaw and its associated attorneys know how to get compensation for those victims. Mr. Archer and the other attorneys associated with JArcherLaw have had hundreds of verdicts at trial, helping those injured receive the financial compensation they deserved and forcing those responsible to pay. A recent suit involving drilling mud with asbestos that caused mesothelioma was brought to verdict by associated attorney James Ferrell with total compensation so far nearing 4 million dollars.

Many attorneys advertising on TV, the Internet, and in print are essentially marketing attorneys who get the cases and then hand them off to some other firm to do the work. Their efforts at finding the cases are compensated when the other firm wins or settles. The attorneys at J Archer Law try the cases themselves and work directly with their clients throughout the process. By contacting Mr. Archer you are contacting an attorney whose trial work has been proven where it counts, in the courtroom. This is attested to by his inclusion in invitation only trial attorney societies: International Society of Barristers and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Joe is also a member of the American and Texas Bar Associations as well as the American Board of Trial Advocates.
