Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a cancer that plagues the cells that protect your body’s vital organs, most notably the lungs, ribs, and heart.  These are the mesothelial cells which make up a non-sticky, fluid-like layer bordering the body’s organs and abdominal cavities, protecting them and keeping them maneuverable.  Imagine the movement of your lungs upon each inhalation and exhalation: this liquid lining of cells is called the Mesothelium, and it helps the movement of the organs to remain fluid and efficient when we breathe or move.  When these protective cells are damaged by things like exposure to asbestos, this lining becomes more susceptible to malignant tumors known as Mesothelioma.

The most common causes of Mesothelioma are exposure to asbestos, whether by continuous exposure or by second hand exposure.  Wives of men who worked around asbestos have been known to develop Mesothelioma from being around the clothes of the husband.  Additionally, the National Cancer Institute fact sheet states there is evidence of Mesothelioma developing from a virus possibly in the polio vaccine known as Simian Virus 40 (SV40).
